Application Guidelines
- Read the fact sheet and Material Data Safety Sheet.
- Shake, stir or agitate the Nochar Fire Preventer (NFP) before application.
- NFP should not be allowed to freeze before application has dried or been absorbed. While this "cure" time is temperature and environmentally dependent, 24 hours is normally adequate.
- Application methods include brush, spray, roller, dipping or fogging with airless sprayers.
- Natural fabrics may be treated through a spray, dip or final rinse laundering process. Line drying is preferred, however machine drying maintains "softer" feel to the fabrics. Remember that retreatment is required after each laundering.
- NFP is a saturant and must be applied to unsealed natural fiber surfaces to be effective (the treatment must penetrate the cell structure). Masking agents used in the formulae can result in solids that need to be screened out to reduce clogging in atomizing sprayers.
- Limited to indoor applications. Exposure to precipitation should be avoided. Penetrants can "wash out" if unprotected. In exterior applications that are exposed to the weather, protect with paint of other compatible sealers.
- Interior applications are generally permanent, and require overcoating only where colorizing or additional stain or smudge resistance would normally be desired.
- NFP does not affect the look or nature of the fiber to which it is applied. As with any water-based application to a wood surface, there is a tendency to raise the grain and a finish sanding step may be required to achieve the desired surface finish. Once absorbed and dry, NFP may be finished or coated with most paints appropriate for the related application.
- NFP will not interfere with water-based stains applied before or after treatment. It is recommended that the fire retardation be applied before staining.
